Licensed to Thrill: IO Interactive & Amazon MGM Studios Debut “Rules of Spycraft” Trailer for 007 First Light

The world’s most famous secret agent is getting a fresh start, and he’s bringing a familiar brand of “creative lethality” with him.

IO Interactive, the masterminds behind the modern HITMAN trilogy, has teamed up with Amazon MGM Studios to pull back the curtain on 007 First Light. The newly released “Rules of Spycraft” trailer offers our most detailed look yet at how the studio is reimagining James Bond’s origin story—blending the social stealth IOI is famous for with the high-octane action expected of a Double-O.

Earn the Number: A Reimagined Origin

Forget the jaded veteran; 007 First Light introduces a 26-year-old James Bond (portrayed by Patrick Gibson). A former Royal Navy air crewman, this Bond is resourceful, reckless, and yet to earn his legendary status.

The narrative, penned by Michael Vogt, pits a young Bond against a rogue former agent, 009. Along the way, players will interact with a stellar cast, including Gemma Chan as Dr. Selina Tan and Lenny Kravitz as the mysterious Bawma.

The Rules of Spycraft: Key Features

The trailer breaks down the gameplay into three core pillars that define the “IOI touch” on the Bond franchise:

  • Social Stealth & Bluffing: Taking a page from Agent 47’s playbook, Bond can use “social engineering” to manipulate his surroundings. This includes eavesdropping for intel and using bluffing mechanics to talk your way past guards—or “reading the room” to identify environmental opportunities.
  • Q-Branch Gadgets: Survival depends on your loadout. The trailer showcased several unique tools, including:
    • The Q-Watch: A multi-tool used to hack cameras or trigger environmental distractions.
    • The Q-Lens: A specialised scanner to highlight hackable tech and enemy paths.
    • The Laser Strap & Dart Phone: Creative tools for non-lethal (or very lethal) problem-solving.
  • Dynamic Combat: When the “quiet” approach fails, Bond is far more mobile than his HITMAN predecessor. The trailer highlighted a Focus ability that slows time for precision disarms, and the ability to use the environment for brutal close-quarters takedowns.

Tactical Simulation (TacSim) Mode

For players who want to sharpen their skills, IOI revealed Tactical Simulation. Spearheaded by Gemma Chan’s character, this replay-focused mode allows players to tackle specific challenges to earn XP and Intel. These rewards unlock exclusive skins, weapon cosmetics, and gadget upgrades, keeping the MI6 armoury feeling fresh long after the main story concludes.
