If you’re a fan of fast-paced strategy, bite-sized deckbuilders, and smart city-building games, mark your calendars: Crux Games has officially announced that Combolands: Roguelike Citybuilder will launch on PC via Steam on August 24, 2026.
Crux Games is an independent two-person studio based in South Africa, formed by Skye Scott and Sam Alfred—the celebrated lead designer behind the BAFTA-nominated indie hit Terra Nil. Created with support from publisher Landfall (Content Warning, HASTE, Peak), Combolands expands on the concepts of their popular Itch.io prototype, Tiny Towns, which racked up over 100,000 views.
Here is everything you need to know about one of this summer’s most promising indie titles.
What is Combolands?
Combolands blends the tactical spatial placement of citybuilders with the high replayability and synergy-chasing loops of roguelike deckbuilders.
Instead of sitting through hours-long city management simulations, players build sprawling, interconnected metropolises in short, punchy 30-minute sessions. Every run takes place on procedurally generated islands, ensuring that no two maps—or strategy runs—are ever identical.
Key Game Features & Mechanics
- Stack Cascading Combos: In Combolands, building placement matters. Players place structures to trigger chain reactions, score massive bonuses, and unlock game-breaking synergies that maximise city growth.
- Deep Guild System: The game features 7 distinct guilds, each equipped with unique buildings and strategic strengths. By selecting 2 guilds per run, players can experiment across 21 unique guild combinations to craft tailored playstyles.
- Massive Variety: Build with over 120 distinct building types, collect 100+ passive heirlooms/relics, recruit from 13+ specialised city councillors, and utilise potions to alter map conditions on the fly.
- Bite-Sized Strategic Depth: Master 10 escalating difficulty ranks that challenge your ability to adapt, experiment, and optimise every square tile.
Free Demo Available Now
Can’t wait until launch day? Crux Games has released a free playable demo on Steam ahead of the official release, letting players test out its high-synergy mechanics today.
Whether you’re looking to break the game with outrageous combo chains or simply craving a satisfying tactical citybuilder you can finish during a lunch break, Combolands is definitely one to add to your Steam Wishlist ahead of August 24.
