Charting the Course: Indie Leaders Navigate Industry Storms at Portside Game Assembly 2026

The indie gaming landscape is more vibrant than ever, but navigating the business side of game development can feel like steering a ship through a relentless storm. Last month, a unique B2B conference offered studio leaders a safe harbour to trade strategies, share vulnerabilities, and plot a course for the future.

On June 25 and 26, Hamburg Kreativ Gesellschaft, through its Gamecity Hamburg initiative, successfully launched the second edition of the Portside Game Assembly.

The event took an unconventional but deeply fitting approach to industry networking: it set sail on a conference ship cruising right through the expansive Port of Hamburg.

Unfiltered Insights on the High Seas

What makes the Portside Game Assembly stand out in a crowded calendar of gaming conventions is its radical focus on intimacy and depth over massive scale. The main event brought together 100 curated participants from established indie game studios spanning 13 different countries.

To foster an environment of honest, raw dialogue, the conference was designed exclusively for decision-makers and studio heads—meaning no sales pitches, no distractions, and no corporate filtering.

Over the two-day assembly, leaders from renowned international studios behind hits like Cult of the Lamb (Massive Monster) and Dome Keeper (bippinbits) took to the water to exchange ideas on the ongoing challenges facing indie studios today, including:

    • Sustainable Studio Growth: How to scale responsibly without losing a studio’s creative soul.
    • Market Penetration & Discoverability: Navigating an overcrowded digital marketplace.
    • Funding and Independent Survival: Finding alternative revenue streams while maintaining creative control.

Through focused roundtables, impulse talks, and keynote presentations, attendees freely shared what works—and, just as importantly, what doesn’t.

“Portside is not your typical conference… No business cards, no distractions, just studio heads having real, honest conversations. Everyone in the room has been through the same challenges.” > — Jeroen Janssen, Studio Head at Happy Volcano

Connecting the Ecosystem: Brunch, Mentoring, and a Floating Party

While the core conference aboard the MS Princess was highly exclusive, Portside Game Assembly 2026 made sure to inject value back into the broader gaming ecosystem through its expanded side programming:

    • The Next Generation of Devs: This year’s event introduced a dedicated mentoring program during the morning Networking Brunch at Hamburg’s HafenCity, pairing up-and-coming indie developers with experienced studio managers.
    • Local Spotlight: The event culminated in a massive Games Industry Party aboard the historic MS Stubnitz. The party featured a dedicated “Games Made in Hamburg” showcase, highlighting the incredible diversity of the local Northern German developer scene.

By creating a “free port” for transparent dialogue, Gamecity Hamburg has cemented the Portside Game Assembly as a vital, refreshing fixture for the international indie B2B community. As studio leaders return to their respective corners of the world, they do so with a tighter network, shared solutions, and a clearer map for the waters ahead.
