Steel, Arrows, Sorcery — Tabletop Tavern Unleashes Magic in Game-Changing The Rift of Magic Update

Since launch, victory was forged in iron. Now the arcane reshapes the table — first major update live now

From the moment Tabletop Tavern launched back in June, every clash, every skirmish, every hard-fought victory was settled the old way: with sharpened steel, feathered arrows, and the roar of gunpowder. That era is over. The Rift of Magic has opened — and the battlefield will never be the same.

Developer Gamirror Games has rolled out the game’s first major content update, bringing spellcasting, mage units, signature hero magic, fresh game modes, and a sweeping suite of improvements to the acclaimed tabletop-style roguelike RTS — all free for all owners.

Magic Arrives — How It Works

For the first time, you can weave the arcane into your battle plans:

    • Up to three spells per battle — every incantation draws from a single, finite mana pool that does not refill mid-fight. Every cast counts, and wasting mana is as costly as losing troops.
    • Faction mages — every playable faction now includes a unique mage unit to recruit. They heal allies, curse foes, rain destruction from afar — and when their mana runs dry, they grab a staff or a club and wade into the fray like everyone else.
    • 16 Signature Hero Spells — each hero now wields a one-of-a-kind spell. Win a run with a hero to unlock their signature magic, and you can carry it into future campaigns with any faction. Examples include:
      • Iron Rain — a devastating bombardment that strikes friend and foe alike
      • Iaijutsu Flash — a single, blinding strike dealing 750 armour-ignoring damage
      • Barricade — conjure a wall that blocks every army, yours included

    New Ways to Play

The update doesn’t just add magic — it expands how you experience the game:

    • Endless Mode — complete Act III and choose to March On. No healing, no fresh recruits, and a deadly warlord arrives every five battles. How far can your depleted army carry you?
    • Daily Runs — the same campaign seed for every player, every single day. Climb global and friends leaderboards to see who masters the same odds best.
    • 14 New Events & Story Chains — fresh encounters, choices, and narrative threads weave through your runs, deepening the world and offering new rewards and risks.

    Overhauls & Polish

Beneath the new content lies a remade foundation:

    • Battle AI rewritten — enemies fight smarter, adapt to your tactics, and coordinate more effectively
    • Charge mechanics reworked — cavalry and heavy units behave more predictably and more powerfully
    • Balance pass — adjustments across ranged units, armour values, and ability costs keep every faction viable
    • Visual & UI refinements — cleaner menus, sharper tabletop presentation, and smoother battle animations

    When Magic Meets Steel

Tabletop Tavern built its reputation on clever tactical depth, distinct factions, and that singular joy of watching your carefully laid plans unfold across a tabletop battlefield. The Rift of Magic doesn’t replace that identity — it expands it. Now you don’t just choose where to position your pikes and archers; you decide when to unleash the storm that turns the tide.

Steel still matters. Arrows still fly. But now — so does magic.

The Rift of Magic is live now on Steam — free for all Tabletop Tavern owners.

Feast, Flee, or Fight — Rise of the Merchants Turns Trade Into Treachery

They say money makes the world go round — in Rise of the Merchants, it also makes enemies, starts fires, and sets hungry rats on your rivals. From developer Black Duke Games, this medieval trading and city‑building simulation proves that behind every great fortune lies a little bit of mischief — and a whole lot of grit.

From Market Stall to Merchant King

You start small: a modest settlement, a handful of coins, and dreams of dominion. Your goal? Build a trading empire that stretches across the realm. But this isn’t a gentle ledger simulator — it’s a world where business is war by other means:

    The Deals

    • Haggle hard — prices shift with supply, demand, distance, and danger. Strike smart bargains and margins soar
    • Feast to forge alliances — wine, mead, and hospitality buy favour with nobles, guilds, and powerful patrons
    • Build trade routes — connect your markets to distant cities. Every road, river, and mountain pass is a potential goldmine… or a trap

    The Betrayals

    • Bribery — coins in the right palms can open doors, secure contracts, or turn guards blind
    • Sabotage — rivals blocking your path? Slow their production, disrupt their supply lines, or tarnish their reputation
    • Arson — think you can burn down a competitor’s warehouse and get away with it? Think again. Hungry rats have a nose for foul play — and they’ll turn on you if you’re careless

    The Perils

    • Bandits haunt lonely roads
    • Seasons change, disrupting harvests and travel
    • Rivals grow bolder as you grow richer
    • NPC and player‑run economies evolve in a shared, persistent world

Build, Trade, Rule — Key Features

    FeatureWhat It Means
50+ unique buildingsWorkshops, markets, guild halls, fortifications — design your city your way

Beyond the Deck — Tangleroots Unveils Starmax, the Sci-Fi Bag-Building Roguelike, Coming in 2027

Tangleroots, the independent studio based in Sweden, has officially pulled back the curtain on Starmax — an inventive sci-fi roguelike that reimagines the deck-building genre by trading cards for tokens and decks for bags. The game is set to arrive on Steam for Windows and macOS in 2027, with the announcement trailer and Steam store page live right now.

A New Way to Build — From Deck to Bag

At its core, Starmax takes the familiar blueprint of a roguelike builder and turns it inside out. Instead of shuffling cards from a deck, you draw tokens from a bag — physical, tangible resources that double as workers, fighters, cargo, and fuel. Every turn you reach in, pull out what the galaxy gives you, and make the most of it.

    • Shape your bag — boost, destroy, discover, and produce tokens to curate exactly what you draw
    • Build your base — research blueprints, construct facilities, and chain buildings into powerful engines
    • Two systems, one strategy — your bag and base don’t exist in isolation; tokens activate buildings and buildings modify tokens
    • Ship cargo to win — gather valuable resources and launch them off-planet before your defences are overwhelmed

    Three Factions, Three Distinct Styles

No two runs feel the same — and neither do three playable starting paths:

    FactionPhilosophySignature Strength
The FoundryIndustry & stabilityConsistent production, heavy manufacturing, sturdy defences
The WanderersDiscovery & adaptabilityToken manipulation, high risk/high reward, exploration bonuses
The CovenantSynergy & recursionLooping effects, repeated value, building chains that never stop

Each faction comes with its own unique starting bag, exclusive buildings, and specialised playstyle — so whether you prefer brute force, clever combos, or calculated risk, there’s a way to play that fits.

Planetside — Danger and Discovery Await

Your base sits on a hostile, procedurally generated world. Explore beyond your walls and you’ll encounter:

    • Deserts, tundras, and jungles — each biome with distinct creatures, resources, and environmental hazards
    • Evolving threats — the longer you stay, the more aggressive the planet becomes; you must balance expansion with a ticking clock
    • Scavenge & ship — rare materials lie in dangerous zones; collect them, protect them, and launch cargo to secure your victory
    • Roguelike progression — unlock permanent upgrades, new tokens, and advanced blueprints that persist across every run

    From Sweden, With Strategy

Tangleroots, known for thoughtful mechanics and clean, inviting design, is self-publishing Starmax. The team describes the game as “a builder where luck is something you engineer — you can’t control what you draw, but you absolutely can control what goes into the bag in the first place.”

Price and system requirements have not yet been announced.

    Wishlist Today

The Starmax Steam page is live right now — watch the trailer, explore the screenshots, and add it to your wishlist to be notified the moment it launches in 2027.
