The gaming world has been on the edge of its seat waiting for a new glimpse of Grand Theft Auto VI, but Rockstar Games workers just dropped a completely different kind of premiere.
In a move that is sending shockwaves through the global gaming industry, employees across Rockstar’s UK offices have officially gone public with the Rockstar Game Workers Union (RGWU). Operating as a subsidiary of the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB), the new union represents a massive, unified front spanning all five of Rockstar’s UK branches: Edinburgh, London, Leeds, Lincoln, and Dundee.
From Secret Organisation to Public Defiance
The path to this historic announcement wasn’t exactly smooth. In fact, it has been a literal battlefield.
If you rewind to late 2025, Rockstar abruptly fired over 30 employees, alleging they had leaked confidential information on a public forum. The IWGB and the affected workers fired back with a very different story: they claimed the staff were systematically targeted and terminated simply for participating in a private, legally protected trade union Discord channel. The IWGB didn’t mince words, calling the firings “the most blatant and ruthless act of union busting in the history of the games industry”—a sentiment that even drew the attention of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who flagged the case as “deeply concerning.”
But if Rockstar management thought the mass dismissals would bury the movement, they severely miscalculated.
Instead of crushing the momentum, the controversy supercharged it. In their public debut video—cheekily titled “The video GTA fans have been waiting for”—the RGWU made it clear that they aren’t backing down.
“Rockstar’s sudden firings didn’t crush our union. Instead, we are now bigger and stronger than ever.”
What Does the RGWU Want?
The Rockstar Game Workers Union isn’t just fighting a legal battle over unfair dismissals; they are actively organising to shift the culture at one of the most profitable entertainment entities on the planet. The union’s core platform focuses on three main pillars:
- Pay Transparency: Ensuring fair, equal, and open compensation structures across all departments.
- Flexible Working Hours: Pushing back against rigid, mandatory return-to-office mandates that disrupted employees’ lives.
- An End to “Crunch”: Eliminating the infamous, gruelling overtime cycles that have historically plagued major AAA game developments.
With the launch of GTA VI fast approaching, the leverage the workers hold has never been higher. The union has established a dedicated fighting fund to back their upcoming substantive employment tribunal, preparing to take Rockstar to court to win back jobs and set a permanent precedent for UK labour laws.
A Seismic Shift for AAA Gaming
For decades, major game studios have operated under the assumption that workers would accept burnout and unstable conditions just for the privilege of putting a legendary title on their resume. The birth of the RGWU proves that the narrative is officially changing.
By aligning with the IWGB, Rockstar’s developers are proving that behind the multi-billion-dollar franchises are real people who deserve dignity, security, and a voice at the table. The game has officially changed.
