  • Farewell to genius! RIP Sir Clive Sinclair!

Mention Sir Clive Sinclair and the reaction of most people would be to laugh and go on to talk about the C5 battery-powered tricycle, which was considered a failure then, but when we think of the current rise in electric vehicle use, it would seem that Sir Clive Sinclair was a man well ahead of everyone else.

For me, it was the ZX computers that changed my life, I could see that the world was changing and these computers opened up a world of possibilities. Like the rest of us misfits, square pegs and rebels, Sir Clive Sinclair was one of us and he will be missed greatly.

  • Big Issue North launches news app

Street News, a news app from the publishers of Big Issue North, is launching today, bringing together the best from the planet’s 150 street papers.

The app shares its name with the first-ever street paper, launched in New York in 1989. That paper gave people experiencing poverty the chance to earn an income by selling the publication on the streets.

Since then, the movement has grown to include more than 150 street papers worldwide, all with a shared mission to alleviate poverty, including two in the UK – The Big Issue and Big Issue North. Linked together in an international network, street papers have supported around 300,000 of the world’s poorest people to earn an income, putting over £24m in their pockets each year.

Globally, 4.6m people read street papers, and now the Street News app gives people the chance to reach crucial stories from their own communities and every corner of the world, all on their mobile.

The stories on the app, raise the voices of marginalised communities around the world and the issues they face while delivering positive change in the North of England.

It’s free to download, and you can read up to five stories a month without paying a penny; however, if users want unlimited access to all content, there is a monthly £4.99 subscription option. Crucially, all income from subscriptions goes to Big Issue North Trust (a registered charity) and helps vendors in the North of England to make positive changes to their lives.

It offers readers impactful analysis, fresh insight and authentic stories from people who don’t typically get their fair share of the spotlight. Current content varies from an exploration of a housing project for people experiencing homelessness post-hospitalisation in Tennessee, USA, to a deep dive into the exacerbation of the UK’s food poverty crisis in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The app also features news from organisations delivering on the ground change across the planet, from Médecins Sans Frontières to Save the Children. At all times, the focus is on giving a voice to people at the heart of issues, not speaking for them.

Kevin Gopal, Big Issue North’s editor, said: “Kevin Gopal, Big Issue North’s editor, said: “The launch of Street News marks a significant point for us. It gives us the chance to look at issues that affect people all over the world and gives them the chance to have their voice heard while retaining our core principle of creating positive change here in the North of England.

“We can offer our readers great insight into marginalised communities that they might not know about and enable people who don’t currently buy a copy of Big Issue North from their local vendor a way to hear these stories, increase their understanding and support local change. Street News tells a global story and makes a local impact.”

Street News is available now on Apple and Android devices. Visit your app store and search ‘Street News’.

If you are looking for further details on this, then you are in luck because more information can be found on the Big Issue North website just click here to find out more!

  • Kandu Arts Reel Film Festival

We are delighted that this year’s Kandu Arts For Sustainable Development film festival in partnership with Reel Cinemas Chippenham will be screened in front of live audiences at the Astoria Reel cinema in Chippenham on Friday 17 September 2021.

After the success of last year, pandemic altered, online festival, this year’s festival marks the 10th Anniversary of the Premiere of Bash Street, the Kandu feature film – premiered at the Astoria in Chippenham and shown at Bath International Film Festival. A gritty look at life with over 100 members of the local community and including professional actors Con O’Neil – Uncle, Ordinary Lies, Happy Valley, Chernobyl and Jan Graveson.

A full schedule of films and a booklet of what’s on is available online and in several locations in Chippenham

Friday afternoon the festival will showcase films from student filmmakers from Wiltshire College on the big screen for the first time. This session will be followed by several films in the late afternoon exploring issues around mental health and identity for young people, made by young award-winning filmmakers both locally and nationally. Cuckooed, Pen, One to One, Vivid Blindness and the brand new “I’m not mental its mental” will feature for the first time. Young people can attend for free after school until the early evening.

From 7 pm onwards the range and tone turn to more adult-themed films with the screening of the feature-length exploration of what lies behind the idyll of the British seaside – “Postcard from Perranporth”, The music Video “Soul Sneeze” from Will Lawton and the Alchemist, “Hazed” – a new short film exploring race and language, “Man Goes for Mangoes” – an exploration of relationships lost and found – a true Kandu collaboration and of course – Bash Street as the final feature of the day. Tickets are available from the box office at Reel Cinemas Chippenham in advance or at the door but there may be limited availability so better to book ahead. We are very excited by this opportunity for so many in the community to come together and huge thanks to the festival sponsors – CoBuy, Trackss and Altlas Gym 24/7 and of course to Reel Cinemas for their continued support.
